First Aid Spilt something on your carpet? Don’t panic.

Here is a checklist of the products you should have in your Carpets’ First Aid kit which should be all ready to go in your laundry cupboard.

What you need:

You should ONLY use the following items for cleaning spills on your carpet. Many other household cleaners contain chemicals that could cause permanent damage.

  • White cloths or white paper towels.
  • Detergent Solution – use no more than 1/4 teaspoon of non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent to 500ml of water. Do not use cloudy or creamy detergents.
  • White Vinegar Solution – mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water.
  • Ammonia Solution – to neutralise odours mix one tablespoon of household ammonia to one 100ml of water. (Do not use on wool or wool-blend carpets).
  • Non-Oily Nail Polish Remover or Acetone chewing gum remover (freeze or solid type).
  • Dry Cleaning Solvent – Use a proprietary dry cleaning solvent. Turpentine or Methylated Spirits can be used as an alternative.
  • Spot Remover – Use spot removers designed specifically for grease, oil, or tar, such as Dirt Devil.

Scrape: First remove as much of the solid spills as possible by scraping the carpet gently with a round cornered spatula or spoon.

Blot: Blot repeatedly with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel. Work from the outer edge toward the centre of the spot to avoid spreading the spill.

Dont scrub: Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing can cause pile fuzz or distort the carpet.

Now remove:Use the spot & stain removal chart overleaf in conjunction with these general guidelines:

STEP 1: Pre-test any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to make certain it will not damage the fibre or the dye. After applying, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and cloth for colour transfer, change or damage.

APPLY a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth; allow to soak in for about 10 minutes then work in gently. Keep using the cleaning solution as long as you can see a transfer of the spill to the cloth. Be patient! Complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times.

RINSE the affected area thoroughly with cold clean water and a sponge, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry.

STEP 2 Finally, blot by placing layers of white paper towels over the affected area, and weigh down with a flat, heavy object. Leave until perfectly dry, preferably overnight.

Carpet Cleaning Guarantees & Warranties

We have talked before about the old ‘bait and switch’ technique in the carpet cleaning industry. It happens when a company will charge a low price – as low as $20 a room – just to get their foot in the door. Then once they are there, they try and convince you that you need extras, such as spot removal or sanitising until you are paying well over the original quote. The Squeaky Clean Team tries to give as accurate a quote over the phone as possible. It helps if you have room measurements and are honest about the condition of the carpet.

When we arrive we measure and inspect the carpets and advise you on what we recommend in terms of service. We remind people that while we are very good at what we do we are not miracle workers – if a carpet has been trampled on by dogs and kids for the last three years it will take some real effort to get it looking almost as good as new. This can not be done for $20 per room! We offer workmanship guarantees on what we can do so if you are not totally satisfied with our work we will come back and redo the job at no cost.

All Squeaky Clean Team technicians are fully insured.

Carpet Cleaning Tips for a longer carpet life

Here are some Carpet Cleaning Tips from our expert Carpet Cleaners at The Squeaky Clean Team

Carpets often suffer from various carpet stains which later can develop to notorious hard to remove spots if not treated immediately. Here are a few small tips on how to deal with stains on your carpet which if you follow will minimise the damage and prolong the life of your carpet:

  1. First scrape up any excess solids or liquids with a dry cloth as soon as you can.
  2. Then blot out as much of the spill or solid possible using a towel.
  3. Do not scrub at the stain as this motion will only set it deeper into the carpet’s fabrics.
  4. Use a mild suitable detergent (may vary from carpet to carpet) to cover the stain.
  5. Remove by blotting until stain is no longer visible.
  6. Follow the Squeaky Clean Teams recommended cleaning programme of regular vacuuming to prolong the life of your carpets and keep your home or office healthy.

And remember how often you get your carpets professionally cleaned is largely determined by the traffic through your home or office. Two adults will walk in far less dirt that two adults, three children and two dogs!

No Job To Hard For The Squeaky Clean Team

Last Friday we received a desperate call from Hallam Senior College. Classes were being evacuated because of a terrible smell that was thought to be coming from the ceiling heating and cooling vents. We called in our cleaning duct expert Robert to go and find our what and where the offensive smell was coming from. As part of our duct cleaning service we  are used to removing dead creatures from the duct pipework – rats, mice, birds, and all sorts of insects manage to find their way into the ducts then die.

In the case of Hallam Senior College the ducts were huge commercial ceiling ducts – suspended in the roof with sections bolted together. They hadn’t been cleaned since installation  – approximately 45 years ago.  Robert quickly worked out the smell was not coming from the ducts. This is where most duct cleaners would say here’s the bill for the call out fee and walk away. Not The Squeaky Clean Team professionals. We were asked to fix a cleaning problem and when Robert left he was determined the smell would be gone too. After crawling around and looking down wall cavities the offensive object was discovered halfway down an inside wall cavity – just behind the main reception desk. With an improvised fishing line Robert was able to extract the poor dead (and very smelly) possum.

Phew classes could recommence!

Protect Yourself (& Your Property) against Washing Machine Floods

We have just completes a survey of flood mop ups jobs we’re called to and a staggering 80% are from washing machine floods!

The damage caused by washing machines overflowing or pipes breaking can be huge. Yet most of these floods could have been prevented by just checking the connections between the water taps and the washing machine regularly.

A job we went to this week was caused by the connector hose splitting. The washing machine not only leaked and flooded the carpet in two rooms of the apartment it was in, but the ceiling below fell in on the tenant below – causing damage to the furniture and possessions below. The total bill $5,000. Neither the tenant nor the landlord had insurance. The cost of a new hose would have been $30.00.

While The Squeaky Clean Team loves to come in and tidy up the damage caused by floods, we’d also like to prevent the human misery caused when these things happen. SO PLEASE reguarly check your washing machine connections and remember it’s better to be safe than sorry.

PS the job we described above is true – the awful thing is after we left having extracted all the water the tenant put on another load of washing – yep you guessed it and the second clear up was bigger than the first!!

Happy “SAFE” Washing

Easy Move Out Cleaning Checklist

If you are preparing to move out of your Melbourne property, you may be a little stressed out. Packing up all of your belongings, arranging for moving help, and moving into a new place can wreak havoc with your nerves. On top of all that, in the back of your brain you know that you are going to have to give your old place a good move out clean in order to get your full security deposit back.

In Victoria all tenants have to have their carpets professionally cleaned when they vacate – no carpet cleaning receipt no bond return!!

The Squeaky Clean Team can not only do your vacate carpet clean but can also step in and help you with your total vacate clean. We know what your Real Estate agent expects and can ensure you get all your bond back. If you choose to do the cleaning yourself we have put together a list below to help you ensure everything is done to get your bond back.

Before You Start Cleaning

1. Get Organized – First you need to book your removalist and carpet cleaners.

As the day of the move approaches the first thing that you should remember to do is to stay calm. Planning and delegation can make all the difference! Enlist as much help as you can from friends and family on the day of the move. As you empty one room, put yourself or one of your helpers to work cleaning it thoroughly.

2. Make a List – The best way to insure that you are cleaning everything properly is to make a move out cleaning list. The first thing on that list should be procuring a copy of your lease agreement. It should contain a move-in inspection checklist that the management will use to determine if you owe them money for damages. Go over this form to see what, if any, damage has occurred since you have lived in the apartment.

3. Ask your Landlord – Another good idea is to ask your landlord to come over and do a preliminary inspection so that you understand exactly what you are responsible for cleaning and fixing. Once you’ve done this – write down what your landlord expects you to do on the original inspection, then ask him or her to sign it. This way, if you do all the work, there will be no surprise charges on moving day.

4. Repair Damages – Next, you need to take steps to fix any damages in your apartment. This may include filling holes in walls or removing spots on carpets.

Cleaning the Kitchen

First on your move out cleaning checklist, you need to specify what needs to be cleaned (and how) in each room. Let’s start with the kitchen. Chances are this is the room that will require the most elbow grease, so be ready to get to work.

1. The Fridge – Tackle the refrigerator first. Throw out all food that will not be going with you and put the rest in a prepared cooler (try to dispose of most of your freezer foods). Start removing shelves and drawers and place them on the counter. Once the fridge and freezer are empty, wipe them down with a wet, soapy rag until clean. Then hand wash the drawers and shelves. Once these are clean and dried, replace them. Use an all-purpose surface cleaner to wipe down the outside of the refrigerator.

2. The Cabinets – Make sure all of the cabinets are empty and use the same multi-purpose cleaner to wipe them down, inside and outside. Don’t forget the drawers, which can get surprisingly dirty both inside and out.

3. The Stove and Oven – Give your stove top a thorough cleaning, being sure to remove all dried on food and grease. Leave the oven for (almost) last. Realistically, most people don’t have time to let the oven cleaner sit for 24 hours, so do your best with all-purpose grease removing cleaner. If you’ve got a big mess in there, you need to plan ahead and clean the oven with heavy duty cleaner a week or two before your move.

4. Finishing up – Finally, clean the vent above the stove, clean the microwave (with some more of that warm, soapy water) and drain and clean the sink. Save the floor for last. Sweep and mop the floor, and if you are wondering whether or not you should pull out the fridge to clean behind it – don’t. The chances of you damaging the floor are not worth cleaning up who knows how many years of dirt that lives behind the fridge. If you have a build up of grime on your tiled floor consider getting the Squeaky Clean Team in with their professional tile and grout cleaning machine to make that floor sparkle again.

Cleaning the Bathroom

Move on to the bathrooms next. The best products to use to really clean built up mildew or water stains is a cleaner with bleach. Soft Scrub with bleach works wonders when left to sit on mildewed tile grout.

1. The Vanity and Sink – Clean the sink vanity top first with a rag, using liquid disinfectant spray, then move into the sink. Make sure to clean out all of the drawers and cabinets as well.

2. The Toilet – Hit the toilet next, cleaning the top of the tank, then the top of the lid, then both the top and bottom of the seat. Use a toilet brush to clean the inside of the bowl, pouring in a bit of bleach to make sure it is thoroughly sanitized.

3. The Tub – Get a clean rag and scrub out the bathtub and surrounding area, making sure to remove any water stains or soap build up. This is when a heavy duty mildew/soapscum cleaner will come in handy.

5. The details – Use a roll of paper towels and go around the bathroom with a spray bottle of Windex. Shining up the fixtures and cleaning the mirror will make the clean bathroom sparkle. Finally, give the floor a good cleaning.

Tackling the Rest of the House

The rest of the house should be relatively easy. In bedrooms, living room, family room, dining room and office, dust and wipe down window blinds, use Windex to clean the window panes, and dust and wipe the window sills. Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures, and finally, vacuum the carpet on your way out. If you run out of time The Squeaky Clean Team can vacuum prior to cleaning the carpets for a minimal extra charge.

What to expect to pay to have your carpets professionally cleaned

Beware of those low price deals!!

We like to be as accurate as possible when we take price enquiries over the phone. We want clients who come back to us again and again because we’ve provided an excellent service at a reasonable price to them. We don’t want to “bait and switch” our clients.

Below we explain the two methods of pricing that most carpet cleaning companies use. While we can not give you an average cleaning price, because it does vary, we can tell you that you should be cautious of the lowest bidder. Remember, you pay for what you get. If a carpet cleaner is not making between $80 to $100 an hour they are loosing money. If someone bids a job lower than that they are probably going to try to pull one of many carpet cleaning scams http://www.carpet-cleaners.info/consumers/cleaning-scams.htm on you. So get a few different carpet cleaning quotes and choose wisely.

If you have never had your carpet cleaned before, you might be a little in the dark as to what to expect to pay. The fact that just about every carpet cleaning company has their own way of calculating cleaning prices doesn’t help either. Prices for carpet cleaning vary greatly depending on the method, the level of service and your location. There are however two basic ways of calculating a cleaning cost.

The first is by the room. This is probably the most popular method of pricing used by carpet cleaners. It allows carpet cleaning services to give consumers a fairly accurate price indication over the phone without the need to do an onsite estimate. The price should include pre-treatment and normal spotting. Your average sized bedroom is 12m2. Master bedrooms with walk in robes may be as big as 20m2. Lounge rooms are usually bigger.

The next method is square metre pricing. This pricing method actually requires the carpet cleaner to do an onsite estimate. They might be able to give you a ballpark price over the phone, but they will need to come to your home and take your room measurements to give you an accurate price. Some cleaners will measure the whole room and others will measure just the open space around the furniture. Either way will probably come to the same price when they multiply it by their m2 rate. Once again, this price should include pre-treatment and ordinary spotting.

Also remember that the cost of getting to you and setting up the machine ready for use is the same whether you have one small room or a whole house of carpet. This is why most reputable carpet firms have a minimum call out charge.
